County-level pilot program approved for expansion to full circuit; system now available to 48 other circuits in the state.
WALTHAM, MA, March 13, 2006 — Metatomix, Inc., the leader in semantic composite applications, today announced that Georgia officials have signed a contract to create an integrated criminal justice information system for the entire Cordele Judicial Circuit based on the successful pilot program in Crisp County. Under terms of the agreement, the same system will be available to the state's 48 other judicial circuits. It will allow officials in the sheriffs', magistrates', public defenders', district attorneys' local police and court clerks' offices to share and process case information while leaving each office's own case-management system in place.
An initial version of the system was tested in Crisp County in October, and the pilot version has been in use since then providing real-time case information from arrest through arraignment. Under the agreement, that system will be expanded in three dimensions: to encompass the entire judicial process through trial disposition; to include local police departments; and to cover the other three counties in the Cordele Judicial Circuit.
"The innovative technology employed by Metatomix provides the perfect integrated justice solution for Georgia's fragmented and decentralized criminal justice system," said Nolan Martin, Deputy Director of the Georgia Public Defender Standards Council.
"There's a lot of interest in this system in a number of other circuits around the state," said Rick Malone, Executive Director of the Prosecuting Attorneys Council of Georgia.
By employing advanced semantic processing technology, the Metatomix system is able to pull data from the often incompatible case management and booking systems used by the different offices, process it and circulate it instantly to all the agencies involved. The system automatically exchanges information such as new arrests and warrants among the different offices without any manual intervention, keeping all the agencies involved up-to-date on every case in the criminal justice system.
This eliminates the need for the same information to be entered multiple times into the different software systems, reducing the possibility for errors and the time required. It also pushes data out to the offices as needed, so that, for example, all the offices are alerted when a person has been booked at a sheriff’s office, a task that formerly required telephone calls or an exchange of paperwork. Yet the system is able to accomplish this without requiring any change in the software that those different offices are using.
"All the participating offices have invested time and money in getting their own software to work well for them," said Jean Rogers, Clerk of the Superior and Juvenile Courts of Crisp County. "We didn’t have to require everyone to use the same software program to get these information-sharing benefits."
